Death wasn't good enough for Leona

Leona Helmsley has left between $5 billion and $8 billion for the care of dogs. Madness on this scale is always breathtaking. Much like their fellow lunatics at the NRA, PETA acolytes are now whirling in a Dervish trance over their good fortune.

What possesses one to leave money to animals? How does this become one's highest priority? Do other countries have an expression for this peculiarly American affliction? Or do they just vomit in disbelief?

There must be a cancer ward or burn unit, perhaps even one for children, that could use a billion or two.
